It always helps to start fast, and that's exactly what Calexico third baseman Kevin Garcia did in this matchup with Imperial Valley League rival. Garcia made two sparkling defensive plays in the first inning, added two more in the second, blasted a double in his first at-bat, then jumped behind the plate as an emergency replacement for the starting catcher, Rudy Arellano. Garcia's hustle and versatility was part of an overall team effort and a 6-3 win for the Calexico Bulldogs over the Brawley Wildcats.
Trailing 4-0 against the Montgomery Aztecs in the 4th inning, the Eastlake Titans refused to give up. Epitomizing that "never-say-die" effort was Eastlake shortstop Hector Lorenzana. Lorenzana drove in a run in the Titans' four-run rally in the 4th inning, scoring the tying run in that stanza. Lorenzana drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning with a sacrifice fly as the Titans prevailed over Montgomery, 5-4.
Jesse Moore, on his way to play shortstop at the University of Hawaii next season, showed his skills on the pitchers mound, helping guide the Mission Bay Buccaneers to a 4-3 win over the University City Centurions. Moore pitched 6 2/3 innings, while striking out 5, as Mission Bay hung on late for a 4-3 win.
The nightcap of the inagural high school baseball showcase at Petco Park featured defending CIF champions Grossmont and Granite Hills and it was the Eagles enjoying a 4-2 victory. Playing under the lights downtown, Granite Hills enjoyed a stellar pitching performance from junior lefty Travis Hopper who was selected as the KBCsports.com player of the game.
Hopper tossed a complete game over the Foothillers, allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out three batters. Things did not start out well for the crafty lefty as Grossmont drew first blood in the second inning thanks to some clutch two-out hitting by Conor Merideth and Robert Reyes to give Grossmont a short-lived 1-0 lead.
Hopper and the Eagles trailed by that score until the bats woke up in the fourth inning as Granite Hills lit the Petco scoreboard with four runs on three hits. The big inning helped chase Foothiller starter Levi Stevens who was nearly perfect until that inning.
Hopper worked out of a mini jam in the sixth, allowing one run on two hits and a walk, but the junior stayed strong and went the distance to post the complete-game win for Granite Hills.
The Eagles improve to 12-3 with the win and Grossmont falls to 14-5 on the season.
