FootballThe De La Salle Spartans, one of the most-storied high school football programs in the nation, held off a furious rally by Centennial High School to take the Division I California State Bowl Championship on Saturday. The Spartans jumped in front early, after forcing a turnover by Centennial, the first of four for the Huskies. De La Salle converted the turnover into a touchdown, and used that early momentum to propel themselves to a 31-7 lead early in the 3rd quarter. But Centennial has a high-powered offense, and behind quarterback Matt Scott, they staged a comeback. Centennial scored 24 unanswered points to tie the ballgame at 31 late in the 4th quarter. But De La Salle, as they so often do, had an answer. The Spartans scored on the next drive, but, after an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty following their touchdown, missed the extra point. Centennial still had two chances to come back and win the ballgame. One drive stalled on a 4th down stop by KBCsports.com Player of the Game, De La Salle's Blair Wishom, who then stopped the last Centennial drive of the game with an interception. Final score: De La Salle 37, Centennial 31.
