Senior attackman Aaron Hemeon had a hand in the first six goals for La Costa Canyon as the Mavericks thumped host Torrey Pines 16-4 in a game broadcast live on KBCsports.com Friday night.
With the win in the regular-season finale for both squads, the Mavericks clinched their fifth straight North County Conference title.
"We thought it would be a close game," said Mavericks attackman Aaron Hemeon. "Coach had us practicing our two-minute drill and hands team getting ready for the last minute."
The last minute didn't have much meaning in this game, but one minute during the second quarter did.
After scoring the first two Mavericks' goals, Hemeon set a screen behind the cage for C.J. Small who wrapped around to score and tie the game 3-3. Hemeon then won the faceoff, sprinted down the field, and passed off to Stedman Slaughter who scored to make it 4-3 just six seconds later. Eighteen seconds ater that, Hemeon assisted on another goal to Slaughter to make it 5-3. T.C. Whaley capped off the rush with a goal at the 5:33 mark to give LCC a 7-3 and take all the life out of Torrey Pines, the defending CIF Champions.
The Mavericks junior varsity set the tone for the night by blitzing Poway 16-3. Eleven different Mavericks scored, led by KBCsports.com player of the game Andrew Bertha who scored three goals and had an assist. Bertha, a freshman midfielder, said it was his first career hat trick.
