The Escondido Cougars defended their CIF San Diego Section Division I softball championship by beating the top seeded Mira Mesa Marauders 2-1 in 8 innings at San Diego State University. Mira Mesa, lead 1-0 until the 5th inning behind a strong pitching performance from senior Melissa Tillett. The Marauders (31-3) had not given up a run in two playoff games, outscoring their opponents 16-0 before allowing Escondido (23-7) to tie the game on an error. Tillet pitched a complete game allowing only five hits.
Escondido junior pitcher Lisa Akamine also pitched a five-hit complete game. Akamine was able to avoid two bases-loaded situations in the 1st and 2nd innings, however she did walk in one run during the Marauders first at bat. Using a plethora of pitches and great location, Akamine kept the majority of the Mira Mesa hitters off balance. Three times during the game Akamine recorded all of the outs for her team. She finished the game with a total of 14 strikeouts. Because of her outstanding performance, she was named the KBCsports.com player of the game. The winning run for the Escondido Cougars came off the bat of sophomore Ashley Lane with runners on second and third in the bottom of the 8th inning.
Mt. Carmel, The number one-ranked softball team in San Diego County, demonstrated why they were the team to beat as they defeated Mission Hills 3-0 in a game broadcast live on KBCsports.com from San Diego State University. Mission Hills played a great game, but two costly errors gave the Sundevils two unearned runs. The Grizzlies put themselves in scoring position but were unable to capitalize on those opportunities. It was the stellar performance by Mt. Carmel junior pitcher Jessica McDermett, who threw a complete game and did not allow a run, which gave the Sundevils their first CIF San Diego Section softball championship. Jessica McDermett was named our KBCsports.com player of the game.

When your No. 2 hitter in your order can handle the bat like sophomore Lauren Tomey, your ballclub is in great shape. Acting like a second leadoff hitter,Tomey went 3-4 against the Christian Patriots, knocked in two runs, and scored two as well. Involved in all four of the Lancers runs, Tomey provided the offensive punch Francis Parker needed to repeat as Division IV champs.
