Junior guard Travon Wesson scored 16 of his 22 points in the first half as the Ridgeview Wolfpack built a 10 point lead at intermission and held off the Stockdale Mustangs 70-68 in a boys basketball battle for first place in the Southwest Yosemite League. Wesson hit eight free throws, two 3-pointers and a bucket to propel Ridgeview (8-1) to a 50-40 lead over the Mustangs (7-1) after the first two quarters in the fierce contest at Stockdale. The 6-foot, 2-inch Wesson, who fouled out midway through the fourth quarter, was named the KBCsports.com Player of the Game.
The Wolfpack upped its lead to 62-48 after three quarters, but the Mustangs forced an array of turnovers in the closing minutes to make the game close.
Senior center Art Charles scored 14 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for Ridgeview, winners of 17 of 22 games this season. Sophomore guard Jorrdan Burris tallied 15 points and stole five balls for Stockdale, losers of eight of 21 games this year.
Stockdale will host West Thursday in SWYL action, while Ridgeview will play at Centennial in an important league encounter on Tuesday, February 12th. |
